This page tracks the national landscape against our own preseason preview — a new section each time there's something real to measure it against, not a running commentary on every game.

And two weeks in, we already have to eat some words.

We can't let this go another section without saying it, Renee — Notre Dame opened the season No. 1, perfectly balanced across the board, and they're 0-2.
Castellan
Stanford got them in Week 0, then Ohio got them in Week 1, after they'd already fallen to No. 11 in the poll. That's not one bad week, that's back-to-back losses to open the year for the team we called dead-even with no obvious weakness in the preview. The weakness was apparently everywhere at once.
Voss
And Oregon, who we flagged for that huge defense-light, 95-point-offense profile at No. 12, lost to Michigan State in a 14-9 defensive slugfest the week before.
Castellan
That's almost the inverse failure mode — a team built to win shootouts getting strangled in one instead. Different problem, same result: another ranked team gone in the opening weeks.
Voss
On the storylines we're actually tracking — Auburn needed overtime to beat a ranked Texas A&M team at home in Week 1.
Castellan
Which actually cuts the other way for Hugh Freeze, at least for one week — a win over a ranked opponent is a win, OT or not, and that's exactly the kind of result that buys a hot-seat coach a little room to breathe. Ask us again in October whether it mattered.
Voss
And Georgia survived Georgia Tech by three in Week 1.
Castellan
A win's a win, but a three-point margin over an in-state rival isn't the kind of statement that quiets questions about a roster that's been bleeding transfers for three straight years. Two weeks in, that story's not settled either way.
SEGMENT 02
Checking The Heisman Board
Voss
Quick check on the preseason Heisman board, since two of those five names just played. Kevin Washington's offense is 0-2 against a preseason No. 1 schedule that's now looking a lot shakier than advertised.
Castellan
That's a brutal context for a Heisman push. It's not that Washington played badly, we don't have his numbers from either game, it's that a watchlist running back on a 0-2 team almost never stays in the national conversation past October, regardless of his own stat line.
Voss
Stephon Benjamin's the opposite case — his team just beat a preseason No. 6 opponent, on the road to overtime, no less.
Castellan
That's exactly the kind of result a Heisman campaign gets built on — a quality win over a ranked preseason opponent, right out of the gate. We don't have his individual stat line from that game either, but the context around it is about as good as it gets two weeks into a season.
Voss
What about the other three — Rask, Bernard, Thomas Teague?
Castellan
No read on any of them yet. Iowa State and LSU haven't shown up in the national spotlight coverage through two weeks, so we genuinely don't know how either team opened. Nothing to report there isn't the same as something going wrong, just an honest gap — we'll have it the moment either program plays its way back into these games.
